What the morning on the water looks like
You check in at 9:00 AM at Dock A, Berth A44 of Marina Moys Olbia, and the boat leaves at 9:30 AM. It heads out of the gulf with Capo Ceraso on the way, into the Tavolara Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area, about 15,000 hectares of protected sea.

The first stop is Spiaggia del Dottore, an hour to swim and snorkel. Then comes a cruise through the reserve and a secret stop of about an hour with the aperitif, local snacks and more snorkeling, followed by a short look at the Orecchio di Ulisse cave from the boat. The operator keeps three stops flexible, so the sea decides the order on the day.
The last part of the morning belongs to Tavolara: a swim at Punta Spalmatore and an hour in the water off the island, under its pale limestone walls. By 1:30 PM you are back at the marina in Olbia, salty, sunny and ready for lunch, with the afternoon still yours.

What makes Tavolara worth the trip
Tavolara is a limestone and granite mountain that rises straight out of the sea, 560 metres high and four kilometres long. Its neighbour Molara is lower and made of granite, and the contrast between them is the backdrop of every swim on this tour.

The whole area is a marine reserve, set up in 1997 and run by the three towns on its shore. Its rules are strict: no swimming and no boats in zone A, slow speeds near the coast and no anchoring over the seagrass meadows. The reward is a sea where the protected area reports an abundant population of groupers.
The island has a story too. A family of shepherds, the Bertoleoni, owned it until 1886, and the legend of the Kingdom of Tavolara tells of a royal title granted to them; a historian confirms that King Charles Albert visited the island, but historians call the title a nickname. You will see their island from the water, and a guide to the legend waits on this site.

Quick · what guests praise
The crew, the stops and the clear water
Read the recent reviews and the same names keep appearing. Guests write warmly about the skippers and guides by name, Salvatore, Antonio and Francesco among them, for being friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, and for sharing stories about the area along the way.

The stops come next. Reviewers describe them as well chosen and picture perfect, with plenty of time to swim at each one without feeling rushed. Several mention how clear the water was and how many fish they saw while snorkeling, and one couple singled out a stop they called Cala dei Gabbiani as their favourite.
Small touches matter too. Guests mention iced tea, fresh water and little pizza snacks handed round on board, Sardinian snacks and drinks with the aperitif, and a crew that made solo travelers feel welcome. One practical tip from a guest: you are in the sun for the whole trip, so bring water of your own.

The months that suit a Tavolara day
Sardinia's bathing season runs from the third week of May to the third week of September, inside a summer season for coastal services from 1 April to 31 October. Those are the months to plan a swimming tour around.
June and September are a sweet spot at Olbia, with average highs of 28.7 °C and 27.9 °C and only a few rainy days. July and August are hotter, averaging 31.9 °C, with about 24 to 25 days a month of 30 °C or more. A morning tour that is back by 1:30 PM avoids the strongest sun of the afternoon on deck.
There is no official sea-temperature station near Tavolara, so this site gives air temperatures only. In spring and autumn, bring a warm layer for the ride home: the air on an open deck feels cooler than on the beach.

Quick · wind and route
When the wind decides the route
Wind is part of life on this coast. The long-term figures for Olbia show about 13 to 18 days a month with wind of 10 m/s or more, in every month of the year. Strong wind of 20 m/s or more is rarer, under one day a month from May to October.

The listing is honest about it: routes may change in adverse weather, and three of the stops vary with the conditions. On a breezy day the stops may therefore differ from the ones listed, and the order can change too.
If the forecast looks rough, calling the day off at least 24 hours before the start costs you nothing, so you can move your trip without losing money. Keep a spare day in your holiday if the boat is a highlight, and check the forecast the evening before.

One rule is strict: punctuality. The listing asks you to arrive 25 to 30 minutes before the start, and late arrivals cannot be accommodated and are not refunded. Plan your route to the marina with time to park; free parking is nearby.
There is no hotel pickup: getting to the marina in via Piovene is up to you. Bring a passport or ID card, because the operator asks every guest to carry one. Pets, luggage and large bags stay ashore.

Snorkeling tips for the stops
Masks and snorkels are included for everyone, so you can travel light. If you own a mask that fits well, bring it anyway: a mask that leaks spoils a snorkel faster than anything else, and yours is the one you know.

Float rather than swim hard. Fish return to the rocks once you are still, and the protected area's groupers live among the boulders and seagrass. Posidonia meadows grow from the surface down past 40 metres, so pale sand patches between them are the best places to watch for movement.
Remember that inside the reserve snorkeling counts as swimming, which is allowed in zones B and C and forbidden in zone A. Zone A is closed to boats as well, so a tour's swim stops are always in water where swimming is allowed. Touch nothing and take nothing from the bottom.
A young island
Tavolara has been an island for only 8,000 years.
Fossil beaches show it was once joined to the land, and a sandy strip called the Passetto still links the Spalmatore di Terra to the rest of the island.
Quick · what to pack
Your bag for four hours in the sun
The operator's own list is short and sensible: a passport or ID card, sunglasses, a sun hat, swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, beachwear and clothing that suits the weather. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and you are ready for the first stop.

Add water. The boat has a small refrigerator and the tour includes drinks, but one guest advises bringing your own as well, since you are in the sun for the whole trip. A thin long-sleeved top protects your back while you snorkel face down.
The boat has an awning for shade, a sunbathing area and pillows, so you can rest between swims. Leave big bags at the hotel: luggage and large bags are not allowed on board. A small dry bag keeps a phone and ID safe from spray.

Quick · guide languages
Italian and English on board
The live guide on this tour speaks Italian and English. The listing names a captain/guide, so the person steering the boat is also your guide for the morning.

Not a native English speaker? The stops speak for themselves, and a snorkel needs no translation. Ask questions during the aperitif, when the boat is at rest and there is time to talk about the island, the fish and the story of its kings.
Several other boats around Tavolara offer more languages, including French, Spanish and German on some full-day trips. If you need a particular language, compare them on this site before you book.

Quick · without a boat
Seeing the island from the shore
If you have a spare day without a boat, Tavolara is still part of the view. Porto Istana, a bay of four beaches at the foot of Capo Ceraso, is twenty minutes by car from Olbia and can also be reached by bus.

Further south, Cala Brandinchi lies almost opposite the island, with very light sand and turquoise water; from 1 June to 30 September access needs a booking. La Cinta, San Teodoro's most famous beach, faces the island across the reserve.
To set foot on the island without a tour, take the shuttle from Porto San Paolo, which runs daily without a booking and lands at the Spalmatore di Terra. The guides on this site explain both, so you can mix a beach day, a ferry day and this boat.

Quick · honest caveats
Who this tour suits, and who should skip it
This tour suits swimmers, snorkelers and anyone who wants the islands from the water in a small group, with the afternoon free. Families are welcome from age 3: it is not suitable for children under 3.

The operator lists who should not join: pregnant women, anyone with back problems or reduced mobility, wheelchair users, people over 130 kg, travelers prone to seasickness and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition. One guest found the ride rough and the small boat full on a choppy day, so think twice if waves bother you.
There is no hotel pickup, and the stops are swim stops rather than a walk on the island. If you want to explore Tavolara on foot, read this site's guides to the ferry and to the boats that land; if you want the sea at its clearest with a guide who knows it, this is your morning.
