Dolphins on this coast
The dolphins you are most likely to see here are bottlenose dolphins. The Tavolara reserve describes their coastal community as usually seen in shallow water, even under 20 metres deep, in small groups with close social ties.3 San Teodoro's tourism office says they are seen very often in the protected area, and that Risso's dolphins and sperm whales have also been sighted.4 They are fast, social and curious, and when they choose to come close to a quiet boat the moment is unforgettable.
Scientists have studied them on this coast. A five-year study on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia spent 1,838 hours in the field and found that dolphins around a fish farm spent 89% of their time foraging.5 It found a relatively small community that stayed resident around the farm over a long period, with sightings peaking in autumn.6
Another study observed 146 groups of bottlenose dolphins around fish-farm cages between November 2004 and January 2006, with a peak in winter, and photographed 34 marked individuals.7 The two studies disagree on the busiest season, which is a good reminder that wild animals keep their own calendar.

Dolphin watching in Golfo Aranci
Many trips start in Golfo Aranci, north of Olbia. The most reviewed is the eco-friendly boat trip from the DST Sardegna Diving & Snorkeling Team office, a 1.5-hour zodiac ride to Figarolo island with a small group of up to 12. It has 3,259 reviews, is rated 4.76 and starts from $41.
Its listing explains where it goes: to Figarolo, where a pod of bottlenose dolphins has frequented the waters for over ten years, and to a fish farm near the island where sea bass and sea bream are raised and the dolphins come to feed. Two crew are on board, a captain and a host, and soft drinks are included.
The operator is a partner in the Il Golfo dei Delfini project and follows its code of conduct for watching dolphins sustainably. The trip depends on the weather and needs a minimum number of guests, so book with a spare day in hand; call the dolphin trip off 24 or more hours before departure and the money comes back.

Dolphin watching from Olbia's marina
If you are staying in the city, two well-reviewed trips leave from the MOYS marina. The eco-friendly trip from berth A18, in front of the parking lot, lasts 2 hours, takes up to 12 guests and heads for the waters off Figarolo, between Capo Figari and Golfo Aranci. This is the page's pick for anyone based in the city: it is rated 4.72 from 879 reviews and starts from $45.
For a longer outing, BlueSea Charter takes up to 10 guests on an 8.50-metre inflatable boat from berth A44 for 3.5 hours. Its listed stops are an hour of swimming and snorkeling at Figarolo, an hour of dolphin watching along the cliffs of Capo Figari and an hour with an aperitif at Cala Moresca, with Isola della Bocca on the way. It is rated 4.88 from 767 reviews. Snorkel gear and a towel make sense on this trip, since the swim at Figarolo comes before the search for dolphins.
Be on time for this one: guests should be at the port 15 minutes before the start, and late arrivals cannot board and are not refunded. Leave a phone number when you book so the crew can reach you if plans change.

What the listings promise, and what nature decides
The listings speak confidently about sightings. The Olbia eco trip claims a chance of seeing dolphins of 95% or more, and BlueSea estimates its chance at around 90%. Those are the operators' own figures, not independent statistics, and no boat can promise that wild animals will appear on your trip.
The listings also describe where the dolphins are found: a pod that has stayed around Figarolo for more than a decade and a fish farm that draws it in. The scientific studies of this coast match that picture of a small, resident group feeding close to the farms.6
Go with the right frame of mind. If you see dolphins, enjoy them quietly; if you do not, enjoy the coast of Capo Figari and Figarolo, which is beautiful in its own right. Figarolo is a pyramid-shaped limestone islet named after its fig trees, home to mouflons, cormorants and buzzards.9 Cormorants on the rocks and the cliffs of the headland make the ride worthwhile even on a quiet day at sea.
How a good boat behaves around dolphins
Inside the Tavolara reserve, which begins at Capo Ceraso and does not reach Figarolo, the rules are precise.32 Watching whales and dolphins is banned in zone A and allowed in zones B and C only with the managing body's authorisation, aboard guided-tour boats.33 Around the animals there is an observation band within 100 metres and an approach band within 300 metres.34
Boats may not come closer than 100 metres, swimming is not allowed in the observation band, no boat may stay there longer than 20 minutes and speed in both bands is limited to 5 knots.1235 Feeding the animals, throwing anything into the water and approaching head-on are forbidden.36
Beyond the reserve's own rules, the code of good conduct of the Pelagos Sanctuary and ACCOBAMS asks boats to keep to 5 knots, to watch for no more than 30 minutes and to keep only one boat at a time near the animals.37 In Italy dolphins and whales are protected by a ministerial decree of 21 May 1980, which bans their capture and killing.38 Ask your operator before booking how it applies these rules; a good one will be glad to explain.
Combining dolphins with Tavolara
A dolphin trip and a Tavolara day fit well into the same holiday. The dolphin boats are short, between 1.5 and 3.5 hours on the trips compared here, so one fits easily around a beach day. This site's own Tavolara tour leaves the Olbia marina at 9:30 AM and is back at 1:30 PM. Pick the dolphin boat for a day when the sea looks calm, because a flat surface makes every fin and every breath far easier to spot.
Some longer trips mix both. One catamaran from Olbia lists Figarolo with dolphin watching after a stop at the Molara pools and lunch at Capo Coda Cavallo, and another catamaran may head to Cala Moresca and Figarolo instead of Tavolara, depending on the weather. A kayak tour from Golfo Aranci with dolphins and an aperitif has 2,267 reviews and lasts 2.5 to 3 hours.
Whichever you choose, bring sunglasses that cut glare, a hat and a light jacket, and keep your camera ready but your voice low. Dolphins surface for a breath and are gone again, so the best photographs come from patience, not from chasing.
